SeeqPod, a three-and-a-half-year-old company that lets Internet users search for "playable content" such as music, and then play it immediately on its site, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. SeeqPod is popular (it claims 45 million visitors a month), but the company had been entangled in litigation with several major record labels, including Warner and EMI, over copyright infringement. SeeqPod argues that its service is legal because it does not host content on its servers.
The most recent lawsuit, filed last month by EMI, targeted the company, all of its investors, as well as Favtape, which used SeeqPod's API to create playlists of online music. Mixwit, another service that depended on SeeqPod's search to find songs, shut down in December, blaming legal uncertainties. A SeeqPod representative did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment last night. SeeqPod's bankruptcy filing was first reported by TechCrunch.
