  • Coal's Dark Days Are Over

    Much like a skipjack, a triggering mechanism that causes mine cars to dump loads of coal in a mine, traders have been dumping coal stocks since peaking in July.  However, the fundamentals of the industry are still intact and coal stocks are likely to provide huge investment returns over the next 3 to 5 years. 

    Yesterday, Peabody Energy (BTU) announced earnings that absolutely shocked the Street, beating the consensus on EPS and Revenues easily, and raising guidance for the year.  When a major industry leader provides such a bright outlook, it is likely that the bottom in the industry has occurred.  The most important statement to come out of the earnings announcement was that “the easing of demand growth is likely to be offset by diminished global coal supply”.  Demand is the key driver for coal stocks and worries about slowdowns in china have led investors to oversell all of the coal stocks.  However, emerging markets such as Russia, South Africa, and Indonesia are seeing robust demand for coal.

  • Some Stocks to Research for the Market Rebound

    The VIX journeyed into the 70's last week. The SPY bounced off support in the $82 - $85 area. The Fed and the Treasury are both taking positive steps to stabilize the markets. Even the housing market showed solid results with a rise in the number of houses sold (albeit at lower prices). Citi dropped its suit to stop WFC from taking over Wachovia. This all tends to make one think there is a near term rebound in the making. If this in fact happens, what stocks do you want to be in? Below are some of my choices:

    This week's article will be short and to the point. I’m at the Republican National Convention and so far there is not a whole lot to report on. To date, Hurricane Gustav has had everybody focused on issues bigger than politics. However, as the Gulf Coast appears to have been spared the worst of Gustav’s wrath, the talk once again is returning to the political issues.

    One of the big issues being bandied about this week centers around expanding domestic drilling for oil and natural gas. While many Americans support enlarging domestic oil and gas exploration, the Democrats have been more lukewarm to the idea.
